Puppet dreadlocks Posted by Toon Asylum on Oct 20, 2008
Hey everyone -

I'm looking for some help with this one. I need to build a puppet with dreadlocks. Has anyone used or found a good resource for this??
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanx -

Easy: buy some dreadlock looking wool!

I found some locally to me, it's a very thick wool (about 1/2 inch thickness), that's a bit twisted, and is multi-coloured.

Not sure where you could find it in the US, but if I found wool like that here, I'm sure you could find it there.

I could take a pic of the wool I have if it helps (it's literally sitting to my right about half a metre away).

hiya Ran,
i had a go a little while back at making dreadlocks for a puppet. somebody here recommended getting some wool roving and use a felting technique to make my own dreds. i'm afraid i didnt get on very well so ended up using a thick wool for my puppets hair.
if you use the search box the topic heading i started was DREADLOCKS FOR A PUPPET. type that in and you should find my post there with everybodies great suggestions. hope that helps and i cant wait to see your finished puppet.

cheers

What type of dreads do you want,  Neat or messy?  A neat dreadlock is normally a tight spiral of hair while a messy one is more of just clumps of hair. Goggle Image Results Wikipedia Dreadlock Info.

As Na replied a good source is wool. Since it is Halloween you might want to check out the costume shops/areas of stores.

I've used a thick macrame cord in black and brown. It is the cord people use when the crochet lawn chair seats. It gives a nice neat dread, I found mine at Ben Franklin crafts.
