adhesives Posted by LJ on Oct 02, 2010
After my week long residency I have a question for all of you who have been doing stuff like this much longer than me.  I tried to make the puppets easy to make with just Tacky glue and staples, but there are just always those things that really need hot glue to stick on.  My question is have any of you found other adhesives that can work with children without having the long wait for the adult to apply the hot glue.  I have tried a variety of things but have yet to find something that really works.  IDEAS please!!!!

I've never tried it before, but I think they sell what is called glue dots or something like that.  I've heard others say they work pretty well.  Fabri Tac is another good glue that sets up pretty fast. You still have to hold the pieces together a bit if there is tension on the joint but it works a little faster then Tacky I think.

Where do you get Fabri Tac?  I personally have not always liked the glue dots but maybe I need to give them another try.

You can get fabri tac at fabric stores or craft stores like Micheal's

Fabri tac works well on foam. I like it much better than tacky.  Glue dots...I love them for crafts. For puppets - I guess it depends on what you are trying to stick together.  They don't work like hot glue.
Double sided carpet tape adheres well and can be cut to any size shape.

You can find it at Lowes, Home Depot, hardware stores, or carpet stores.

I don't know the age that you are working with....if you are working with grade 1 in a school environment you can always ask there "buddy" class to help them out with the gluing...I will say that I have had no problems with working with glue guns at the grade 2 level and up......I think us adults give kids less credit....I have only a few little burns on the fingers and they all survived and only gained life experience from the situation....as well they all went back and finished there puppets no one ever pouted in the corner...lol.

I agree with you but have also been told by some schools and or teachers that I was not allowed to use hot glue guns! So I was trying to find other ways to make it work if it was possible!

Really! Wow! Sorry to hear...no wonder our kids are growing up with no self esteem!
