Re: Bronwyn - Felt Doll Posted by Rosie H on Jun 28, 2011
Hi Angel,
The labeled pattern piece you see above was done like this:
I printed the labeling on paper THEN drew the pattern around the label and cut it out. I know it sounds strange but I'm waiting for my B in L to bring my graphics tablet from the US next month. And with that I can do it properly... draw the patterns onto the computer, then add the text, hope this makes sense.
I did it that way so I could at least get the instructions and image part of the pattern done.
I have a scanner so if I can't wait (I really want to get these on sale asap) I may have to scan multiple pieces onto letter-sized paper
Have you used a graphics tablet before for pattern making?

My daughter has some sort of tablet that you can draw on to hook up to the computer, but I've never used it. Maybe I can try that? I'd have to fiddle with it and see what it can do. Thanks!

It's worth looking into how to use that. It seems like the best way to make patterns and get them digitalized without using a scanner. If you handwriting is legible you can skip the typing and use your own writing. It is good for pointing out tips on the actual photos you might use for guidance too.

Hi Rosie and everyone else!
Wow it's been a loooong time since I last posted anything but I have been lurking around every now and then. Rosie LOVE the doll and your other work, I booked mark your web site you are such an inspiration. I have made a few dolls but they are faceless right now. I'm terrified to paint the face. The dolls are made from felt. I have practice on scrap fabric but I'm still afraid that I will mess up. Any tips, suggestions? I'm working on creating some dolls from my own patterns. I love fairies and I'm like studying every artist work that I come across. I have not made any puppets lately just been just creating other things but I have lately fallen in love with doll making and trying to learn as much as possible. Let me know what you think of my "faceless" children. LOL. I wanted to post a few pictures but didn't know how, so you will have to view them in my gallery. I also made their outfits.

Hi Angel, I saw your dolls, I think they're terrific, really well done!
I understand how you feel about painting the faces, it is kinda scary to start with.
What you can do is just make heads without hair and practice on them, assuming that your dolls are not all in one, you could then attach the heads with the nicest faces to the the bodies.
Check online too, there's lots of tutorials of how to paint and soft sculpt dolls' faces.
You could just design some dolls that have the simplest features and make faces to match, like my 'Caribbean Daisy' dolls...

Thanks Rosie for the tip. I never thought about making faces the way you suggested. I love the faces on your dolls, simple but expressive. I guess that what I need to consentate on and go from there. Thanks for the compliments on my dolls and keep up the good work.

Hi everyone, I'm still working on my dolls, Bronwyn is pretty much finished, but I'm trying to finish everything before I put the patterns, dolls online for sale. It's hard work but I'm having a great summer.
My son thinks this guy, Leo is a bit too skinny? I think I agree, so I'm working on adjusting this pattern to make him more 'squat'!
This is a mannequin doll pattern I've been working on, very poseable and with this pattern so many types of doll figures can be made.
This is a Tilda style doll I've designed, not as simple but easy to make, she comes with lots of clothes and accessories.

I like Leo, I think your son might be right but I wouldn't "squat" him too much.

Just lovely. I really like the owl and the details on Tilda's jacket.
Re: Bronwyn - Felt Doll Posted by Rosie H on Jul 21, 2011
yes, shawn, I see so many different sized barn owls so I won't adjust him too much.
Thanks MPG, the jacket is 'paddington bear' style', when a was little I had a similar one in blue with a red lining. I didn't have any small toggle buttons so I had to use some from my christmas stash. The doll's name is Jemima, she's a 'tilda' style doll.
