I am making a children's book using photography and miniatures instead of illustrations. Hallmark has actually put out a line of books that does this.
Was wondering if anyone knew of any books or had any experience creating scenes like these using miniature dolls and such. Any tips?

I would suggest looking on YouTube for set building vids for stop-motion animation.  Same principle but without the moving images.

Yes I have done it, with puppets. The main thing you need to keep in mind, is in your composition, allow for  the text. You need to have the text clear, as to what is going to be written and on what shot, so that you can compose the shot with that space for the text to go into. It is a little strange at first as you tend to want to compose it as you see it, but you need to imagine the text as part of the composition.

I'd look at people who do miniature doll houses, etc. There are some really great videos on Youtube, and books via Amazon, on making things using polymer clay at miniature sizes. I made tiny slices of oranges using this vid:


It's difficult, but with practice can look very very good.

Oooh, thanks! I did look into doing miniatures ages ago and sort of left it behind due to other projects. I've always meant to come back to it.
