That is good news! I realize that there is still a bit of a journey ahead for you both but it sounds hopeful for Becki.

Let me say first that while I do admire the talents of ventriloquist and think it is admirable that you are learning the art, I think you could preform the puppet and not worry about moving your lips. Children won't even notice if your lips move. I've done it in the past with both hand in mouth "Muppet" style puppets and with my marionettes.
What type of materials do you have available to you in South Africa? Can you easily get PVC pipe that is used for water pipes and the joints used to connect them? That is what a lot of puppeteers in the US and Europe use for their stages. It is light wieght and you can hang different colored curtains off of them. Here is a very basic design example. http://www.play-script-and-song.com/pipe-puppet-stage.html and another http://www.dougledbetter.org/howto/puppet_stage/ Here is a link to where you can actually buy the plans for one or even pre-made. http://www.puppets-etc.com/stage.htm

RK Publishing looking for puppet builder! Posted in RK Publishing looking for puppet builder! on Jun 22, 2011
Recently I was contacted by a representative of RK Publishing asking if I could build a puppet for them. As you all know I do very little custom puppet work these days so thought I would pass on the details to you all.
They need between 50-100 of these built for them and they need to keep the price per unit at $15.00 or below. The puppet will be used by teachers in conjunction with their "Club Mystere" readers. Below is a drawing from the reader of the dog you would need to re-produce.
Here is an example of the type of puppet they are looking for. http://www.puppetsbypost.com/animal_hand_puppets/dogs/dog-small
If your interested you can contact Lyne via rkpublishing@yahoo.ca
I think this could be a great opportunity for one of our members! I realize the price per unit may seem a bit low but I think it could be done. Perhaps the base pattern could be taken off of the Glorified Sock Puppet pattern. Might have to increase the size a bit and round out the shape of the head and snout some. Hey MsPuppet... you up for another go at building a puppet for a book?

Wow plastic document folders... what a clever idea! They seem to work really well.
Sorry to hear that you have been having asthma issues. I can some what relate since when I was a teen I had pretty bad asthma. Had to do the oxygen thing myself in the past. Luckily aside for the occasional hay fever attack now and then I seem to have grown out of it.

Don't forget that Billy has two drawings that show two methods of doing this.
I would suggest that with the method shown in the first picture that you bend the ends of the wire over. If you don't they tend to work their way out of the foam. In fact I normally bend then wrap a bit of tape around the ends to make sure they stay securely in the foam.

Hana Backland recently contacted me via email to let me know about a live-action puppet pilot called Nettlecatfish that has been produced.

Nettlecatfish from Hana Backland on Vimo.
It is well produced and quite entertaining! I invited Hana to register and join in our community here. Hopefully she will.

I would really hate to see you give up your puppets. I can understand them being moved to the back burner for now but once your wife gets better I am sure you are going to want them back.
Maybe we as a community can help you out financially some. I would be more then happy to send a bit of money your way. Do you have a PayPal account? I would also like to offer putting a donation button on the site here that would lead to your PayPal account. What do the rest of you folks here at Puppets and Stuff think? If you need some supplies to finish out some puppets maybe some would be in a better position to send you off a care package of puppet supplies you might need.
